An intense white light is emitted when an oxyhydrogen flame (a flame made from a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen gases, approximately 3000°C) is blown onto lime, causing it to become incandescent. An even more intense light can be obtained by using zirconite. It is also called Drummond light, as it was invented by T. Drummond in 1825. In 1837, this light was focused by a lens and used for the first time as a spotlight, which was a groundbreaking event in the history of theater. By the 1860s, it had become possible to realistically reproduce the light of the sun and moon, and it began to be used for stage lighting, replacing the dark footlights of the past.
