…In 105 BC, they annihilated the Roman army at the Battle of Arausio, shocking Rome, but the Cimbri then split off and headed for Spain. Two years later, when the Cimbri returned to Gaul, the tribes split into two factions and attempted to invade Italy. The Teutones, along with the Ambroni (probably a northern Germanic tribe like the Cimbri, though this is unclear), attempted to invade Italy from the maritime Alps, but were annihilated by the Roman army under Marius at the Battle of Aquae Sextiae (now Aix-en-Provence) in 102 BC.
