...Even after World War I, Milan was home to a dynamic school of abstract painting led by Enrico Prampolini (1894-1956) and Atanasio Soldati (1896-1953), who were descendants of the Futurist movement. On the other hand, Italy also had a lineage of representative 20th-century figurative artists, including A. Modigliani, G. Morandi, G. de Chirico, as well as sculptors M. Marini, Pericle Fazzini (1913- ), and G. Manzur. After World War II, Renato Guttuso (1912-87), a figurative artist who advocated the theory of socialist realism, represented the Italian left in figurative art, while Giulio Turcato (1912- ) and Emilio Vedova (1919- ) advocated abstract techniques and sparked controversy.
