Also known as Hamanashi. A deciduous shrub of the Rosaceae family that grows in colonies on the sandy coasts of Honshu (north of Ibaraki on the Pacific coast, and north of Tottori on the Japan Sea coast) and Hokkaido. The branches are thick and densely covered with fine thorns. The leaves are pinnately compound with 7 to 9 leaflets that are wrinkled on the upper side and covered with dense white hairs on the lower side. In summer, the branches bear five-petaled flowers 6 to 8 cm in diameter, red (rarely white), which later bear spherical yellow-red fruits. The fruits are edible.

ハマナシとも。本州（太平洋岸の茨城以北，日本海岸の鳥取以北），北海道の海岸砂地に群生するバラ科の落葉低木。枝は太く，密に細かいとげがある。葉は羽状複葉で，小葉は７〜９枚，上面にしわがあり，下面には白い密毛がはえる。夏，枝先に径６〜8cm，紅色（まれに白色）の５弁花を開き，後に黄赤色で球形の果実を結ぶ。果実は食べられる。
