Also known as Hamanashi. A deciduous shrub of the Rosaceae family that grows in colonies on the sandy coasts of Honshu (north of Ibaraki on the Pacific coast, and north of Tottori on the Japan Sea coast) and Hokkaido. The branches are thick and densely covered with fine thorns. The leaves are pinnately compound with 7 to 9 leaflets that are wrinkled on the upper side and covered with dense white hairs on the lower side. In summer, the branches bear five-petaled flowers 6 to 8 cm in diameter, red (rarely white), which later bear spherical yellow-red fruits. The fruits are edible. →Related topics: Rosa multiflora | Notsuke Peninsula | Roses Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
