Around 1340-93
Vicar-General of the Archbishopric of Prague. Catholic martyr. Born in Nepomuk in western Bohemia. Also called John of Nepomuk. In Czech, he is called Jan Nepomuk. He was arrested and tortured by Bohemian King Wenceslas IV, who was fighting with the archbishop, and then thrown from Charles Bridge into the Vltava River in Prague. He was canonized in 1729, but it is said that he was canonized as part of the Counter-Reformation to counter the Hussite faith that was still deeply rooted in the people.

プラハ大司教の総代理。カトリックの殉教者。ボヘミア西部のネポムクの生れ。ネポムクのヨハネスともよばれる。チェコ語ではヤン･ネポムツキーJan Nepomucký。大司教と争っていたボヘミア王バーツラフ4世によって逮捕され，拷問を受けたのち，プラハのカレル橋上からブルタバ川に突き落とされた。列聖式は1729年に行われたが，民間に根強く残るフス信仰に対抗するために反宗教改革の一環として列聖されたともいわれる。
