Around 1340-93 Vicar-General of the Archbishopric of Prague. Catholic martyr. Born in Nepomuk in western Bohemia. Also called John of Nepomuk. In Czech, he is called Jan Nepomuk. He was arrested and tortured by Bohemian King Wenceslas IV, who was fighting with the archbishop, and then thrown from Charles Bridge into the Vltava River in Prague. He was canonized in 1729, but it is said that he was canonized as part of the Counter-Reformation to counter the Hussite faith that was still deeply rooted in the people.
