It is a representative fungus of the order Acrasiales of the phylum Myxomycota, commonly found in soil and humus leaves. It is also called cellular slime molds or cellular slime molds. Its cells are eukaryotic and it is heterotrophic, but it has uninuclear amoeba-like vegetative cells that ingest solid matter and digest it internally. The amoebae multiply by division, and when conditions are right, many amoebae gather together and become pseudoplasmodium without fusing, and the whole behaves as if it were a single body, appearing as a multicellular organism.

土壌や腐植葉などに普通に見られる変形菌門アクラシス目の代表的な菌である。細胞性粘菌類，細胞性変形菌類ともいう。細胞は真核細胞で，従属栄養を営むが，単核のアメーバ状の栄養細胞があり，これが固形物を摂取し，体内消化する。アメーバは分裂して増え，条件が適すると多数のアメーバが集合し，融合することなく偽変形体pseudoplasmodiumとなり，全体があたかも一つの体のように行動し，多細胞生物のように見える。
