Japanese: 和田山[町] - わだやま

Asago is an old town in northeastern Hyogo Prefecture, occupying the middle reaches of the Maruyama River. Its main settlement is the junction of the Sanin Main Line and the Bantan Line, and is the centre of the Minami-Tajima region. Industries such as silk-reeling and spinning are carried out here, and Taketa in the south is famous for Japanese furniture and lacquerware. It is home to Ritsuun Gorge, a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, and the ruins of Takeda Castle (historic site), built by Yamana Sozen. In April 2005, it merged with Ikuno Town, San'in Town, and Asago Town in Asago County to become a city, forming Asago City. Area: ^{111.61 km2} . Population: 17,514 (2003).

兵庫県北東部，円山(まるやま)川中流域を占める朝来(あさご)郡の旧町。主集落は山陰本線と播但(ばんたん)線の分岐点で，南但馬(みなみたじま)地方の中心。製糸・紡績工業などが行われ，南部の竹田では和家具，漆器を特産。桜の名所立雲(りつうん)峡や山名宗全築城の竹田城跡（史跡）がある。2005年４月朝来郡生野町，山東町，朝来町と合併し市制，朝来市となる。111.61km²。１万7514人（2003）。
