Patiño [Simón Ituri Patiño]

1862‐1947
Bolivian businessman. A mestizo from Cochabamba, he started out as a merchant and became the world's number one tin magnate and one of the richest men. He first obtained a monopoly on the Uncia tin mines in the Catavi region through fraudulent means, and then his business expanded rapidly after 1899, when the price of tin in London soared. After 1924, he moved his business headquarters to the United States and stayed in Europe and the United States as a self-funded diplomat. He never set foot on Bolivian soil again, except for a brief return in 1924.
