Lorenzo - Lourenço (English spelling)

A Japanese Jesuit missionary. Lorenzo was his baptismal name; his real name is unknown. He was born in Shiroishi, Hizen (present-day Shiroishi-cho, Kishima-gun, Saga Prefecture). He was a blind biwa priest, but in 1551 (Tenbun 20) he was baptized by Francis Xavier in Yamaguchi and worked for the Society of Jesus as a dojuku (a person who lived with the missionaries, took care of their personal needs, and helped with their missionary activities). In 1563 (Eiroku 6), he became the first Japanese person to be allowed to join the Society of Jesus. Although he was not educated, he was a skilled speaker and had the power to attract people. He engaged in missionary work mainly in the Kyoto area, and was involved in converting feudal lords such as Takayama Ukon and his son, and Konishi Yukinaga and his son, to Christianity, leaving a significant mark on the early history of Christian missionary work. He spent 29 years in the Jesuits, and 40 years of his life since his baptism dedicated to the propagation of Christianity, before passing away at the age of 65 on February 3, 1592 (Tensho 20) at the Todos os Santos Church in Nagasaki.

日本人イエズス会宣教師。ロレンソは洗礼名で、本名は不明。肥前(ひぜん)白石（現、佐賀県杵島郡(きしまぐん)白石町）に生まれる。盲目の琵琶(びわ)法師であったが、1551年（天文20）山口においてフランシスコ・ザビエルより洗礼を受け、同宿(どうじゅく)（宣教師と共住して身の回りの世話をし、伝道活動を助ける）としてイエズス会のために働いた。1563年（永禄6）日本人として初めてイエズス会入会を許された。学問はなかったが、話術が巧みで人をひきつける力をもっていた。京都地方を中心に宣教活動に従事し、高山右近(たかやまうこん)父子、小西行長(こにしゆきなが)父子をはじめとする大名をキリシタンに改宗させることにかかわり、初期キリシタン布教史に大きな足跡を残した。イエズス会にあること29年、受洗より40年の生涯をキリシタン布教に捧(ささ)げ、1592年（天正(てんしょう)20）2月3日長崎のトードス・オス・サントス教会で65歳の生涯を閉じた。
