A submerged annual aquatic plant of the family Hydrocharisaceae (APG classification: Hydrocharisaceae). It has no rhizome, but the leaves grow on the base, the young leaves are linear, the mature leaves have long petioles, and the leaf blades are egg-shaped, broadly elliptical, 10-30 cm long, 5-20 cm wide, and soft. They resemble plantain leaves, and are aquatic, hence the name. From August to November, numerous flower stalks emerge from between the leaves to the water surface, forming lanceolate sheaths with wings at the top, about 4 cm long, at the end of which bisexual flowers with a diameter of 2-4 cm bloom for one day. The corolla is slightly reddish purple, and the petals are broadly egg-shaped with three petals. There are three sepals. It grows in rivers and rice fields, and is widely distributed from Hokkaido to Okinawa and in temperate zones.
