A rocky mountain of about 130m high protruding from the water surface of the Rhine near St. Goarshausen, a town on the Rhine basin in central-western Germany. It is the climax of the Rhine Valley between Rüdesheim, the starting point of the Rhine River cruise, and St. Goarshausen, about an hour by train from Frankfurt am Main. ◇This rocky mountain is located at a sharp curve where the width of the Rhine suddenly narrows and the flow becomes fast, and there are many rocks hidden under the water, so ships sailing through it have often run aground or sunk. This gave rise to the witch legend ( Lorelei legend ), which says that if a boatman passing through here is captivated by the song of a beautiful girl with a golden comb, his ship will be swallowed up in a whirlpool.

ドイツ中西部、ライン川流域の町ザンクトゴアルスハウゼン（St. Goarshausen）の近くにある、ライン川の水面から突き出た高さ130mほどの岩山。ライン川下りでは、フランクフルト（Frankfurt am Main）から列車で1時間ほどの、ライン川クルーズの起点リューデスハイム（Rüdesheim）とザンクトゴアルスハウゼンの区間のライン渓谷のクライマックスとなっている。◇この岩山は、ライン川の川幅が急に狭まり、流れが速くなる急カーブにあり、水面下に隠れている岩も多いことから、航行中の船がたびたび座礁(ざしょう)や沈没事故を起こした。このため、ここを通る船の船頭が金色の櫛(くし)を持った美しい少女の歌に魅せられると、船が渦の中に飲み込まれてしまうという魔女伝説（ローレライ伝説）を生んだ。
