Located in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City, this is the head shrine of all Inari shrines across Japan. The deity enshrined is Uganomitama, the god of food, or more correctly, Fushimi Inari Taisha. In ancient times, it was worshiped as the clan deity of the Hata clan, but since the Middle Ages, it has been widely worshiped by the general public as the guardian deity of industry and the economy. There are over 40,000 branch shrines throughout the country. It is thought that the reason foxes are considered messengers of the god is because the god's other name, "Miketsu," was confused with the three foxes.
