It is an Arabic word meaning "fear" or "caution," but in Islamic terms it is used as kitmān, meaning "intentionally concealing one's faith when there is a risk of harm." The Ibadi sect, a branch of the Kharijites, was the first to recognize taqiyya, but it was later inherited and developed by Shiite sects. Shiites believe that faith is expressed by the heart, tongue (words), and hands (deeds), but that if there is a certain or strong possibility of harm to one's own life or property or that of fellow believers, it is permissible to conceal the expression of faith by the tongue and hands.
