In July 1690, the British Protestant King William III's army (36,000 troops) defeated the Catholic army of his predecessor, James II, (25,000 troops) on the banks of the Boyne River in Ireland. This effectively ended James II's fight to regain the throne after he had been dethroned during the Glorious Revolution. James fled to France, but Catholic resistance in Ireland continued until the Truce of Limerick in September of the following year. Every year on July 12th in Belfast, Northern Ireland, a Protestant march is held to commemorate the victory of the Battle of the Boyne. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
