One of the 15 republics that made up the former Soviet Union. Its official name is the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (Rossiiskaya Sovetskaya Federativnaya Sotsialisticheskaya Respublika). It was established on November 7, 1917, as a result of the October Revolution, but changed its name to the Russian Federation in December 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed. It covered a vast area stretching from eastern Europe to northeastern Asia, with an area of 17,075,400 km2, nearly twice the size of the United States and 76.2% of the total area of the Soviet Union.
