971?-1046 A nobleman from Catalonia in northeastern Spain, and bishop of Vic in the region. Born the son of a count of Cerdanya, part of Catalonia, he was the great-grandson of King Bifredo I, the father of Catalan unification. He is thought to have been educated at the Benedictine monastery of Ripoll (founded in the 6th century, rebuilt in 880), and after his father's death he succeeded him as head of the family, but eventually entered monastic life at the same monastery (1002). Six years later he was elected abbot, and in 1017 he was appointed bishop of Vic. At the time, Catalonia had only recently gained independence from the Frankish monarchy (988), and the country was literally facing a crisis that threatened its very existence, with its capital, Barcelona, being destroyed by a Muslim military offensive (985).
