A nobleman from Catalonia in northeastern Spain, and bishop of Vic in the region. Born the son of a count of Cerdanya, part of Catalonia, he was the great-grandson of King Bifredo I, the father of Catalan unification. He is thought to have been educated at the Benedictine monastery of Ripoll (founded in the 6th century, rebuilt in 880), and after his father's death he succeeded him as head of the family, but eventually entered monastic life at the same monastery (1002). Six years later he was elected abbot, and in 1017 he was appointed bishop of Vic. At the time, Catalonia had only recently gained independence from the Frankish monarchy (988), and the country was literally facing a crisis that threatened its very existence, with its capital, Barcelona, being destroyed by a Muslim military offensive (985).

スペイン北東部カタルニャの貴族で，同地方のビック市の司教。カタルニャの一部であるセルダニャの伯爵の子として生まれ，カタルニャ統一の祖ビフレド1世の曾孫にあたる。リポールのベネディクト会修道院(6世紀創建，880年再建)で教育を受けたと考えられ，父親の死後家督を継いだが，やがて同修道院で修道生活に入った(1002)。6年後には修道院長に選ばれ，1017年にビック市の司教に任命された。当時のカタルニャはフランク王権から独立(988)して日も浅く，イスラム教徒の軍事攻勢で首都バルセロナが破壊(985)されるなど，文字どおり存亡の危機に立たされていた。
