〘 noun 〙① Eight times one minute. ② Eight- tenths. Eight-tenths. Eight-tenths. About eight-tenths. By extension, to be modest. ※Joruri, Kamata Hyoe Meisho Sakazuki (c. 1711), Vol. 1, "Mikata Hachibu no Makegun"③ In the Edo period, the sound of a bell chiming the next hour when one -eighths of one hour have passed. Also, the sound of that bell. ※Sakehon, Hitome Dotei (1788), "I heard eight-tenths of ichibu and thought I'd go home, but then a cat started crying because it was starving"④ A type of Sugihara paper that originated in Sugihara, Harima (Hyogo Prefecture ) . ⑤ A type of gambling. Happun [eighths]

〘Noun〙 The name of a style of Chinese calligraphy. A type of clerical script. It is said to have been created by Cai Yong in the Han dynasty in China, or by Wang Chizhong in the Qin dynasty. Some say it was named after the fact that the style of writing looks like the number eight is dispersed, while others say it was named because it is a style of writing that is a mixture of two parts of seal script and eight parts of clerical script. Eight-part characters . Eight-part script. Eight-part body. *From Seireishu-IV (around 835), Shinshin Gyoso Tohitsuhitsubo: "Instead of myself, it is in the style of small eight-part writing, in the style of copying from a calligraphy book, although I have never seen it before, and I have received oral instruction."

はっ‐ぷん【八分】

〘名〙 漢字の書体の名。隷書の一種。中国漢代に蔡邕が、または秦代に王次仲がつくり出したという。その書体が八の字が分散しているようであるところから名づけられたとも、また篆書(てんしょ)二分と隷書八分とのまじった書体であるので名づけられたともいう。八分字(はふじ)。八分書。八分体。※性霊集‐四(835頃)進真行草等筆表「自外、八分小書之様、蹋書臨書之式、雖未見作、得具足口授耳」

はち‐ぶん【八分】

〘名〙① 八分の一。八等分。※今昔(1120頃か)三「汝、我等が為に仏の舎利を分たむ事、等くして八分に可成しと」② 十分の八。※曾我物語(南北朝頃)八「その盃を十郎にさす。酒を八ぶんにうけて、思ひけるは」
