Rennell Island

Japanese: レンネル[島]（英語表記）Rennell Island

It is a raised atoll in the Coral Sea, located in the southwest Pacific Ocean, at the southern end of the Solomon Islands, about 185 km south of Guadalcanal Island. It has an area of about 650 km2 and a population of 1,132 (1976). Lake Tengano (130 km2) is located in the east. The island is surrounded by hills about 110 m above sea level, and the outer side is bordered by steep cliffs that meet the coastline, but the inner side has a gentle basin-like topography. The climate is hot and humid all year round, with the average daytime temperature exceeding 30°C and the annual rainfall being 3,000 to 4,000 mm. From April to November, stable easterly or southeasterly trade winds blow, and from December to March, northwesterly or westerly winds blow, but cyclones strike during the latter period.

南西太平洋，ソロモン諸島南端，ガダルカナル島の南方約185kmのサンゴ(珊瑚)海に浮かぶ隆起環礁。面積約650km2。人口1132(1976)。東部にテンガノ湖(130km2)がある。島の周囲は標高110m前後の丘陵がとり囲み，外側は急峻な崖になって海岸線に接するが，内側はゆるやかな盆地状地形を呈する。気候は一年を通じて高温多湿で，昼の年間平均気温は30℃を超え，年間降雨量3000～4000mm。4月から11月までは安定した東ないし南東の貿易風が，12月から3月にかけては北西ないし西風が吹くが，後者の期間にサイクロンが襲来する。
