An administrative division of China during the Qing Dynasty. Roughly equivalent to present-day Hebei Province. Zhili meant direct control of an official agency two levels higher, but during the Ming Dynasty the area centered on the capital Beijing was called North Zhili, and the area centered on the former capital Nanjing was called South Zhili (Jiangsu and Anhui Provinces). In the Qing Dynasty, South Zhili was abolished and North Zhili was renamed Zhili Province, with the governor stationed in Baoding. The name was retained even after the Republic of China was established, but was renamed Hebei Province when the capital was moved to Nanjing in 1927.
