A general term for an instrument that remotely measures the distance to a target. Classically, it was an instrument that measured optically using the principle of triangulation, and of these, those for precise measurements are called range finders or distance meters, while small ones used for photography etc. are called range finders. They have an optical system as shown in , and the angle of a rotating mirror is adjusted so that the double image of the target formed by the two optical paths overlaps, and the distance to the target is calculated from the angle at that point. Since around 1990, range finders that shine a laser beam or ultrasonic beam on the target and calculate the distance from the time it takes for the reflected wave to return have been widely used.[Mitsui Kiyoto] [Reference] |©Shogakukan "> Principle of rangefinder (Diagram) Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
