Kyogenshi - Kyogenshi

Japanese:
Kyogenshi - Kyogenshi
An actress in the Edo period. Because Kabuki was a world for men only, women formed troupes and performed plays and dances in the Ooku or in the inner quarters of various feudal lords, where men were not allowed. Most of them were dance teachers in the town, and each had a set number of daimyo whom they frequented. It is unclear when they first began, but they are thought to have existed in the mid-Edo period. After the Meiji period, some female Kabuki performers performed, but many became independent dancers, and became the basis for the establishment of a dance world separate from the world of Kabuki.
