It is a suburb of New York City in the southeastern part of New York State in the United States. It is located on the east bank of the Hudson River. It has a population of 196,086 (2000). It has characteristics similar to the neighboring borough of the Bronx to the north. Although it is primarily a residential city, it also has a thriving industry, including elevator manufacturing, which has been a tradition since 1852, as well as cable, pharmaceutical, and paper manufacturing. It was founded by the Dutch West India Company in 1639, but it did not become an independent town until 1855, and city ordinances were implemented in 1872. Philip House, built in the 17th century, is preserved as a representative building from the colonial era.
