One of the four gospels in the New Testament. Together with Matthew and Mark, it is one of the synoptic gospels. Based on the Gospel of Mark, it shares many phrases with Matthew, almost word for word, except for the accounts of Jesus' birth, childhood, and resurrection, and other parts unique to Luke, suggesting that the two have a common source (two-source theory). Its tone is universalistic, and Jesus is described as "a light to the Gentiles." It is generally believed to have been written by the same author as the Acts of the Apostles, and considering the first-person account in the Acts of the Apostles, the tradition that it was written by Luke, a companion of Paul, cannot be easily denied. Since the Acts of the Apostles was not influenced by the letters of Paul, it is difficult to imagine that it was written after 80. The upper limit is said to be the fall of Jerusalem (70).

新約聖書4福音書の一つ。マタイ，マルコ福音書とともに共観福音書をなす。『マルコによる福音書』を枠組みとし，イエスの生誕，少年期，復活の記録およびそのほかルカ固有の個所を除いてはマタイと類似ないしほとんど逐語的同一性を示す語句が多く，両者に共通の資料を想定させる (2資料説) 。その基調は普遍主義的であり，イエスは「異邦人を照す光」とされる。一般に『使徒行伝』と同一作者によるとされ，それに『行伝』の一人称記録の部分を考慮にいれれば，パウロの同行者ルカの作とする伝承もあながち否定しえない。『行伝』にパウロ書簡の影響のないことから 80年以降の著作とは考えにくい。上限はエルサレム陥落 (70) とされる。
