He later studied at the University of Berlin, and after returning to Japan, he taught aesthetics and then philosophy at the University of Geneva, remaining single all his life. He published several books of poetry and literary criticism during his lifetime, but what made him instantly famous was the posthumous publication of two volumes of Excerpts from the Diary (1882-84).
