…Swiss man of letters and philosopher. Born into a French Protestant family, he lost his parents at an early age and was taken in by his uncle. He later studied at the University of Berlin, and after returning to Japan, he taught aesthetics and then philosophy at the University of Geneva, remaining single all his life. He published several books of poetry and literary criticism during his lifetime, but what made him instantly famous was the posthumous publication of two volumes of Excerpts from the Diary (1882-84). These were compiled from 17,000 pages of notebooks that he had been writing from 1847 until his death. …
