Izen

A haiku poet from the early Edo period. His given name was Gennojo. His other names included Sogyu, Furado, and Toriochito. He was from Seki, Mino Province (Gifu Prefecture). He became Basho's pupil in the early Genroku period (1688-1704), and from 1690 (Genroku 3) onwards he was a frequent attendant of his teacher and was very fond of him. He accompanied Basho on his final journey, along with Shiko and others, and was present at his bedside when he was ill. After his teacher's death, he wandered around Kyushu, Tohoku and the Hokuriku region, and from 1705 (Hoei 2) he retired to Benkei-an in his hometown. He was a carefree and carefree man, and was known for his eccentric behavior, such as preaching "Fura Nembutsu," and for enjoying simple poverty amidst his wildness, he spent his life. His style of writing was light and witty, and later he even experimented with colloquial language and non-seasonal poems. He died at the age of 60. His edited works include "Fuji no Mi" (1702) and "Futabashu" (1702).

江戸前期の俳人。名は源之丞(げんのじょう)。別号に素牛、風羅(ふうら)堂、鳥落人など。美濃(みの)国(岐阜県)関の人。元禄(げんろく)(1688~1704)初年芭蕉(ばしょう)に入門、1690年(元禄3)以降はよく師に随侍し、親愛せられた。とくに芭蕉最後の旅には、支考(しこう)らとともに随行、その病床にも侍した。師の没後は九州や東北、北陸地方を放浪し、1705年(宝永2)からは故郷に弁慶庵(べんけいあん)を結んで隠棲(いんせい)している。性は飄逸無頓着(ひょういつむとんじゃく)で、「風羅念仏」を唱導するなど奇行に富み、風狂のなかに清貧を楽しんで一生を過ごしたという。作風は軽妙洒脱(しゃだつ)、のちには口語調や無季の句まで試みた。享年60余歳。編著に『藤の実』(1702)、『二葉集』(1702)などがある。
