Born: April 9, 1802. Sanmatti Died: March 19, 1884. Sammatti Finnish folklorist. Known for collecting and editing the national epic poem, Kalevala. Born the son of a poor tailor, he first studied literature and then medicine. While working as a doctor, he continued his energetic work, compiling the Kalevala in 1835 and completing the definitive edition of 22,795 lines with further additions in 1849. He also compiled many other valuable Finnic materials, including Kanteletar (1840-41), on national lyric poetry, spell poetry, and proverbs.
