The jumping competitions on Pentecost Island, one of the islands that make up the Republic of Vanuatu, are the roots of the sport known today as bungee jumping. They take place in the village of Bunrapu on the east coast of the southern part of the country, where participants stand on their backs against a 20m-plus tree, build a tower out of timber and vines, and jump headfirst from boards that jut out from each height of the tower, using vines wrapped around both ankles as safety ropes.
