A monk of the Rinzai sect Shoichi school in the mid-Muromachi period. His original Buddhist name was Tokei, and he received the imperial name Ryoan from Emperor Go-Tsuchimikado, which he used as his Buddhist name. His other name was Hattaisu. He was from Ise (Mie Prefecture). At the age of eight, he became a monk under Daigi Hoshin of Anyo-ji Temple, was ordained at Tofuku-ji Temple in Kyoto, and served under Unsho Ikkei (1386-1463), Isshu Tokuho (1370-1466), Issho Tokugan, and Chikugo Shoyu (1380-1461) of Toka, and lived at Anyo-ji Temple, Shinnyo-ji Temple, Tofuku-ji Temple, Nanzen-ji Temple, and other temples. At the advanced age of 81, he was appointed as an envoy to Ming China, received the imperial title of Butsunichi Zenji, and entered China, where he was also appointed the 101st abbot of Ikuo-san. He passed away on September 15, the year after his return to Japan (Eisho 11). He wrote two volumes of sayings, titled "Jinshin Nyumyoki."

室町中期の臨済(りんざい)宗聖一(しょういち)派の僧。初めの道号は桃渓(とうけい)といい、後土御門(ごつちみかど)天皇より室号「了庵」の宸翰(しんかん)を受けて道号に転用。別号は鉢袋子(はったいす)。伊勢(いせ)(三重県)の人。8歳で安養(あんよう)寺大疑宝信(だいぎほうしん)に就(つ)いて出家、京都東福寺で得度(とくど)、雲章一慶(うんしょういっけい)(1386―1463)、惟宗徳輔(いしゅうとくほ)(1370―1466)、惟肖得巌(いしょうとくがん)、洞下(とうか)の竹居正猷(ちくごしょうゆう)(1380―1461)らに歴参、安養寺、真如(しんにょ)寺、東福寺、南禅寺などに歴住した。81歳の高齢で遣明使(けんみんし)に任ぜられ、仏日(ぶつにち)禅師の勅号を受けて入明、育王山101世の住持にも任ぜられた。帰朝の翌年永正(えいしょう)11年9月15日示寂。語録2巻、『壬申(じんしん)入明記』の著がある。
