A small wooden or steel boat that is carried on a ship and used to rescue people in the event of a disaster. It is equipped with emergency food, drinking water, and a signal, and can accommodate about 40 people adrift for about a week. There are two types: oar-powered and motor-powered, and there are various standards for stability, speed, fire resistance, number of passengers, and size. The Ship Safety Act requires passenger ships and other ships to be equipped with lifeboats. In the 1960s, new types were installed to take into account fires on tankers, and ships that require many lifeboats, such as passenger ships and ferries, are equipped with plastic life rafts and inflatable rubber boats.
