…the name of a city that was built mainly by the colonial activities of the ancient Greeks and Romans. In Greek it was called apoikia, and in Latin it was called colonia. The ancient civilizations of the West were primarily urban civilizations, but in Greece in particular the rise and fall of civilization was based on numerous city-states called polis.
