A representative political party in the Philippines formed after World War II. After the war, Philippine politics faced the difficult question of how to deal with those who had collaborated with Japan during the Japanese occupation. President Osmeña of the Nationalist Party, which maintained the Commonwealth government in exile in Washington, was forced by pressure from the US Department of Defense to adopt a policy of punishing those who collaborated with Japan. However, Roxas, who aimed to become a new leader in postwar politics, gained the backing of General MacArthur, commander of the GHQ, and proposed a policy of exoneration for those who collaborated with Japan, and left the Nationalist Party in December 1945.
