Rehabilitation engineering

A field of medical engineering that researches and develops various prosthetic devices necessary for rehabilitation. The concept of rehabilitation engineering was born out of attempts to expand the scope of rehabilitation for people with disabilities. For example, systems that go beyond the scope of traditional rehabilitation medicine have come to be considered, such as improving the functionality of prosthetic limbs and braces to compensate for physical deficiencies, giving people with disabilities the ability to freely control these devices or equipment based on their own will, and planning the coordination of both from an engineering perspective to create conditions in which people with disabilities can more easily adapt to the social environment.

リハビリテーションに必要な種々の補装具などの開発･研究を行う医療工学の一分野。リハビリテーション工学の概念は障害者のリハビリテーションの拡大をめざす試みのなかで誕生した。たとえば，障害者の用いる補装具として義肢や装具の機能をより進めて身体的欠陥を補足するとか，これらの器具または機器を障害者の意志にもとづいて自由に制御できる能力を付与するとか，社会環境のなかに障害者がより適応しやすい条件をつくるために工学的立場で両者の協調を計画するなど，従来のリハビリテーション医学の範囲を越えたシステムが考えられるようになった。
