[Private, Kita-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture] [Established by] Ritsumeikan School Corporation [Founder] (Ritsumeikan/Founder) Saionji Kinmochi (Private Kyoto Law and Politics School/Founder) Nakagawa Kojuro [Background and history] In 1869 (Meiji 2), Saionji Kinmochi established the private school Ritsumeikan. In 1900 (Meiji 33), Nakagawa Kojuro established the Private Kyoto Law and Politics School. In 1903 (Meiji 36), the organization was changed to the Private Kyoto Law and Politics College. In 1904 (Meiji 37), the Private Kyoto Law and Politics University was established. In 1913 (Taisho 2), the name was changed to Private Ritsumeikan University. In 1922 (Taisho 11), the name was changed to Ritsumeikan University. [Campus] Kinugasa Campus (Kita-ku, Kyoto City) / Biwako-Kusatsu Campus (Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture) / Suzaku Campus (Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City) / Tokyo Campus (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) [Marks] The school emblem is a stylized version of the two characters "Ritsumei." It has been used since 1913 (Taisho 2), and took on its current form around 1941 (Showa 16). In 1994 (Heisei 6), the symbol mark was established. It is a visualization of the communication name RITS, expressed in the school colors. In October 2007 (Heisei 19), the communication mark was established. In June 2008 (Heisei 20), the trademark was registered (No. 5140443). It uses the initial letter "R" of Ritsumeikan, and was designed by art director Akiyama Gugi.
