A theater magazine. First published in January 1907 (Meiji 40). Published by Engei Gahosha. Edited by Nakata Tatsusaburo. The first issue featured an art edition on the frontispiece, followed by scripts, opinions, novels, and miscellaneous notes, and was primarily entertainment-oriented, but it gradually began to include research-based material such as critiques, theater reviews, and performance records, as well as enjoyable reading material by cultural figures, politicians, and business people, making it a magazine for everyone. With a focus on Kabuki, the magazine features stage photos and theater reviews from theaters in the east and west each month, making it a valuable source of theater information, and the actors' discussions on the arts are also often useful. After the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 (Taisho 12), Atsumi Seitaro and Abe Yutaka took over as editors, and the magazine was discontinued in 1943 (Showa 18) during World War II due to the merger of theater magazines. There are 439 issues in total. 69 issues from the Meiji era were reprinted by San'ichi Shobo in 1978 (Showa 53). In addition, the three volumes of the "Engei Gaho General Index" compiled by the National Theatre Performing Arts Research Office - the Personality Edition, the Works Edition, and the General Edition (1974-77, Heibonsha) - are essential books for viewing "Engei Gaho."
