A representative conglomerate and business group in Korea. Its core company, Samsung Corporation (capital 141.7 billion won in 1995), was originally founded in 1937 as Samsung Shokai by Lee Byung-chul, who had started a brewing business during the Japanese colonial period. This became Samsung Corporation in 1947, and then became the current organization in 1952. It then expanded into the sugar, carding, and flour milling industries to handle American aid supplies (establishing CheilJedang in 1953 and Cheil Wool Textile in 1954, and opening a flour milling division at CheilJedang in 1958). During the post-Korean War reconstruction period, the Samsung Group expanded its business by domestically producing consumer goods that had previously been highly dependent on imports, and by the end of the 1950s it had become one of Korea's leading conglomerates.
