Fokine

Japanese:
Fokine
Russian dancer and choreographer. Later he took the name Michel Fokine. Born in St. Petersburg, he graduated from the Imperial Choreographic School in 1898 and joined the Mariinsky Theatre Ballet Company. He developed an interest in choreography early on and studied art, music, and theater, aiming to create ballet as a comprehensive art form. In 1907 he created The Dying Swan for Pavlova. This work was different from previous ballet works, using an existing masterpiece (Saint-Saëns's The Swan). Diaghilev, who was aiming to create a new art form, invited Fokine to be the chief choreographer of the Ballets Russes, and most of the Ballets Russes' programs from 1909 to 1912 and 1914 were Fokine's works. Her style was innovative, placing emphasis on theatricality, using costumes and stage sets that fit the theme, and in some cases not even using pointe ballet, and she is said to be the father of modern ballet. Since 1923, she has lived in New York. Her main works include "Les Sylphides" (1909, original by Chopin), "The Firebird" (1910, music by Stravinsky), "The Fairy of the Rose" (1911, music by C. M. von Weber), "Petrushka" (1911, music by Stravinsky), and "Daphnis and Chloe" (1912, music by M. Ravel).
