An indigenous people who lived in Spain and northwestern Italy since prehistoric times. Known by Greek colonists, they were considered a robust and courageous people. They left behind an early Iron Age civilization, but the details of their origins are unknown. They came into contact with and merged with the Celts, and often troubled Rome, and sided with Carthage during the Punic Wars. They spread from southern Gaul to Etruria, but were subordinated to Rome around 117 BC, and an administrative region called Liguria was established under Emperor Augustus (reigned 27 BC-14 AD).
