Lu Jiuyuan (Xiangshan) of the Southern Song Dynasty in China preached that "the mind is the same as reason," and Wang Shouren (Yangming) of the Ming Dynasty called this "Xingxue" (mind study) and opposed Zhu Xi's "Xingxue" (principle study). Since it seeks to clarify the true "mind" of human beings and become a saint, it is called Lu Wangxue in contrast to Zhu Xi's school of thought. However, while Lu Xiangshan maintained that "the mind is endowed with reason," Wang Yangming maintained that "the mind creates reason." From this difference, Yangming created a new philosophy called "realizing good knowledge."

中国、南宋(なんそう)の陸九淵(きゅうえん)（象山(しょうざん)）は「心即理」を説き、明(みん)代の王守仁(しゅじん)（陽明）はこれを「心学」とよび、朱子の「理学」と対抗した。人間の本来の「心」を明らかにして聖人となろうとするので、朱子学に対して陸王学と称する。ただし陸象山は「心は理を備えている」と主張するのに対し、王陽明は「心が理をつくりだす」と主張している。この相違から、陽明は「致良知」という新しい思想を生み出した。
