1735‐1803 (20th year of the Kyoho era‐3rd year of the Kyowa era) A senior vassal of the Yonezawa Domain in the mid-Edo period. Commonly known as Kurobei, he was also known by the pen names Taika and Kokodo. At the age of 17, he succeeded to the family headship and joined the Nakanoma group. He participated in the Meiwa and An'ei reforms that began in 1767 (Meiwa 4), and rose from magistrate to page head (300 koku). These reforms under the rule of Uesugi Harunori (Yozan) were interrupted during the Tenmei era (1781-89) before being succeeded by the Kansei Reforms, and Yoshimasa was a central figure in the reforms. In 1791 (Kansei 3), he became a Churo-shoku (chief elder), and prepared the outline of the reforms, Souhi (General), and Juchiku Kengi (Shuchiku Proposal), as well as compiled Yozan's words and deeds, Gyosohen (Kyosohen).
