…In 1946, L. Weinstein of the United States observed that an infection caused by another resistant bacteria occurred when chemotherapy was being performed with antibiotics. He named this a new disease, and in 1954 proposed a new term, superinfection. Meanwhile, in France, J. Brisou published a paper called “Chronic Infections by Selection and Substitution.” Taking a hint from the title of this paper, the terms “microbial substitution phenomenon” and “microbial substitution disease” were coined in Japan. …
