Bigmouthed fish - Ooguchi Shugyo

Poet. Born in Nagoya. His given name was Taiji. Shugyo also went by the pen names Tabishi, Tahishi, Shoen, and Hakujushi, and his family home was called Shirakashinoya. He studied waka poetry under Ito Sukenobu and Takasaki Masakaze. In 1889 (Meiji 22), he was recommended by Masakaze to work at the Imperial Household Ministry's Poetry Office. After working as a Poetry Office recorder, he became a member of the Poetry Office in 1906 (Meiji 39). He also founded the Chikusa-kai and worked to popularize waka poetry. In 1916 (Taisho 5), he was involved in the compilation of the collection of poems by Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. He wrote many objective descriptive poems, including the family anthology "Okuchi Taiji Okinoshu." He is also known as a Japanese-style calligrapher and a researcher of ancient calligraphy, and his achievements, such as the production of the hand mirror "Getdai" (Tokyo National Museum) and the discovery of the "Honganjihon Thirty-six People's Anthology" (Nishi Honganji Temple), should be highly evaluated.

歌人。名古屋生まれ。名は鯛二(たいじ)。周魚はその号で、ほかに旅師、多比之(たひし)、櫧園(しょえん)、白檮子(はくじゅし)などとも号し、家を白檮舎(しらかしのや)と称した。和歌を伊東祐命(すけのぶ)、高崎正風(まさかぜ)に学ぶ。1889年（明治22）正風の推挙により宮内省御歌所(おうたどころ)に勤務。御歌所録事を経て、1906年（明治39）御歌所寄人(よりうど)となる。かたわら、千種会(ちくさかい)をおこして和歌の普及に努めた。16年（大正5）明治天皇・昭憲皇太后御集の編纂(へんさん)に従事。客観的な叙景歌が多く、家集『大口鯛二翁集』がある。また、和様書家、古筆研究家としても知られ、手鑑(てかがみ)『月台(げつだい)』（東京国立博物館）の制作、『本願寺本三十六人家集』（西本願寺）の発見など、その業績は評価されるべきものである。
