A former town in Yuri County in southwestern Akita Prefecture. It borders the former Honjo City to the south and faces the Sea of Japan. It was built on the reclaimed land of Nishimegata Lake at the end of the Edo period and is a producer of high-quality Akita rice. Hydroponic farming is popular. It also produces fruit trees and mushrooms. In March 2005, Honjo City merged with the towns of Yajima, Iwaki, Yuri, Chokai, Higashiyuri, and Ouchi in Yuri County to become Yurihonjo City. 38.06 km2 . 6,733 people (2003). 秋田県南西部，由利郡の旧町。旧本荘市の南に接し日本海に臨む。幕末の西目潟干拓地で良質の秋田米の産地。水耕栽培が盛ん。果樹，キノコなども産する。2005年３月本荘市，由利郡矢島町，岩城町，由利町，鳥海町，東由利町，大内町と合併し市制，由利本荘市となる。38.06km2。6733人（2003）。
