A former town in Yuri County in southwestern Akita Prefecture. It borders the former Honjo City to the south and faces the Sea of Japan. It was built on the reclaimed land of Nishimegata Lake at the end of the Edo period and is a producer of high-quality Akita rice. Hydroponic farming is popular. It also produces fruit trees and mushrooms. In March 2005, Honjo City merged with the towns of Yajima, Iwaki, Yuri, Chokai, Higashiyuri, and Ouchi in Yuri County to become Yurihonjo City. 38.06 km2 . 6,733 people (2003).
