Samurai bond

Publicly offered bonds denominated in yen issued by non-residents in Japan. They are called "Samurai Bonds" overseas. They are issued by international organizations, foreign governments, foreign local governments, government-related organizations, private companies, etc. to directly raise yen funds, and are listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The first bond was issued by the Asian Development Bank at the end of 1970, the first bond issued by a foreign government was an Australian government guaranteed bond in 1972, and the first bond issued by a foreign private company was an American Sears Roebuck ordinary bond in 1979. All Samurai Bonds were issued as unsecured bonds, and the terms of issuance were determined for each bond issue, contributing to the internationalization and liberalization of Japan's capital market. Samurai Bonds have the advantage that non-residents are exempt from interest withholding tax.

非居住者が日本国内で発行する円建ての公募債券。海外では「サムライ・ボンド」と呼ばれる。国際機関，外国政府，外国の地方公共団体，政府関係機関，民間会社などが直接円資金を調達するために発行しており，東京証券取引所に上場されている。起債第1号は 1970年末のアジア開発銀行債，外国政府の起債第1号は 72年のオーストラリア政府保証債，外国民間企業の起債第1号は 79年のアメリカのシアーズ・ローバック普通社債。サムライ・ボンドはすべて無担保債として発行され，発行条件は起債銘柄ごとに決定されるなど，日本の資本市場の国際化，自由化に貢献した。なおサムライ・ボンドは非居住者にとって利子源泉税が免除されるというメリットがある。
