The capital of the Raqqa Governorate in northeastern Syria. It is located about 180 km east of Aleppo, on the left bank of the Euphrates River. It thrived as a commercial city above the ancient Greek and Roman city, and during the Abbasid period played an important role as a frontier base headquarters for the Byzantine Empire in the west. Today, the outer edge of the old city is a small commercial center, and is a junction of roads connecting the four directions. Population: 130,000 (1992 estimate).
