A type of Thai theatre. Other Thai theatre styles include khon (masked theatre), nang (shadow theatre), and hun (puppet theatre). There are two theories about the origin of the word lakhon: a Cambodian word and a place name in southern Thailand. Lakhon originated as a dance, and is divided into travelling theatre (lakhon chartri), internal theatre (lakhon nai), and external theatre (lakhon nok). Travelling theatre is the original form of internal and external theatre, and was introduced from India via Malaya. It is a type of theatre performed by a small number of people and centred around the king, and likhe (dance and music theatre) is also part of this trend.
