...The reason why the town has been a constant source of conflict since ancient times is that it occupies a strategically important location, which is the gateway between the Indian plains and the Deccan plateau. Today, the ruins of the fort that remains on the central hill of the town were built by Man Singh (1486-1517), and the cave temples below the fort walls are carved with many statues of Hindu and Jain gods from that time. The Sindhia family's enthusiasm for promoting industry led to the creation of specialty products such as pottery, hand-woven textiles, rugs, and sculptures.
