The anti-Habsburg War of Independence broke out in Hungary after the withdrawal of the Ottoman Empire. When the Ottoman Empire renounced its control over Hungary in the Treaty of Karlovy VII in 1699, the whole of Hungary was reduced to the status of a hereditary state of the House of Habsburg, and absolutism was introduced by the Habsburg government. This caused growing dissatisfaction among many of the Hungarian ruling class, peasants, bandits, and volunteer soldiers known as kurz. Dissatisfaction had already manifested itself in peasant uprisings in the Tokaj region in 1677.
