Russian composer. Born in Ukraine. In 1759, he was hired by the St. Petersburg court choir. He studied composition under Italian opera composer B. Galuppi, who stayed in St. Petersburg as court choirmaster from 1765 to 1768, and studied in Italy from 1769 to 1779. He composed and performed at least three operas in Venice and other cities. After returning to Russia, he became choirmaster and later general director of the court choir. In the 1780s, he produced many works in the field of secular music, including operas, chamber music, and keyboard sonatas, but after that he composed mainly liturgical music for the Russian Orthodox Church.

ロシアの作曲家。出身はウクライナ。1759年ペテルブルグの宮廷合唱団に採用された。65‐68年宮廷楽長としてペテルブルグに滞在したイタリアのオペラ作家B.ガルッピに作曲を学び，1769‐79年イタリア留学。ベネチアなどで少なくとも三つのオペラを作曲･上演した。帰国後は宮廷合唱団の楽長，のちには総監督になった。80年代にはオペラ，室内楽，鍵盤ソナタなど，世俗音楽の分野に多くの作品を残しているが，以後はもっぱらロシア正教会の典礼音楽を書いた。
