Shi is "katashiro (formal substitute)". When worshipping ancestors, this is the person who stands in place of the spirit and receives the rites. This was a child, so it was written as shido. It was called yorimash because the spirit would reside in the child. Examples of the characters used include uchijin, yoza, takusha, indo, and yodo. When prayers are offered to a child placed in yorimash, the spirit will possess the child and give oracles. Ancient festivals were centered around these shido. Ise's Saio (Itsuki no Miko) was a yorimash established by the Yamato Imperial Court.

尸は「かたしろ（形代）」。祖先を祭るとき、神霊のかわりに立って祭りを受ける者。これには児童をもってあてられたので尸童と書く。よりましとよぶのは、神霊がその童子によりつくことからいう。憑人、依坐、託者、因童、依童などの用字例がある。よりましに立てられた童子に対して祈祷(きとう)を行うと、神霊がこれにのりうつって託宣をする。古代の祭りはこの尸童が主体であった。伊勢(いせ)の斎王(いつきのみこ)は大和(やまと)朝廷がたてたよりましであった。
