Johann Sebastian Bach composed nine contrapuntal variations (BWV1079) in 1747. The work was composed based on a theme given to him by Frederick the Great when he visited the Potsdam Palace, and was dedicated to him with a dedication. The music makes full use of traditional contrapuntal techniques, and is a representative work of Bach's later years, when he had turned his back on the trends of the times. In particular, "Ricercare for Six Voices" is highly regarded as the pinnacle of contrapuntal music.
